ADHD Therapy in Nashville

Tired From All The Mental Gymnastics Of Living With ADHD?

If you struggle with symptoms of ADHD, our therapists probably have a good idea of some of the challenges you live with on the daily. Whether your functioning, mood, or relationships are affected, you may feel like your brain can only operate in full-on juggle mode.

We get it—you’re successful and high-achieving, but your life is a game of catch-up. You often feel overwhelmed and scattered. And the stress of it all makes otherwise small or ordinary tasks feel like huge ones, like there’s not enough water in the world for all the fires you’re constantly putting out in every direction.

It makes sense that you feel exhausted at the end of the day, frustrated with yourself and unable to show up in your relationships how you’d like to. Instead, you feel weird around others, like you’re misunderstood or unable to stay relaxed and present in conversations. More than once, you’ve had to answer for missed dates or deadlines, and you may be just the slightest bit guilty of leaving people on read.

At Therapie, we want to work with you to understand your unique brain and what it needs to feel functional. Incorporating evidence-based approaches with actionable skills, we want to help you feel like your ADHD symptoms are manageable and under control.

What Is ADHD And How Is It Affecting You?

Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a condition that is common in both children and adults. In fact, approximately 6.0% of adults in the U.S. have a current ADHD diagnosis, which is about one in 16 adults. It can present as a mix of emotional, physical, cognitive, and relational challenges, including:

  • Trouble with focusing, organization, impulsivity, and time management
  • Feelings of frustration or overwhelm when performing otherwise ordinary or manageable tasks
  • Difficulties with memory or follow-through, often impacting work performance and relationships
  • Burnout from hyperfocus and/or masking (i.e., acting or appearing a certain way so as to fit in and not feel judged)
  • A cycle of shame and guilt that follows missed appointments, deadlines, and general lack of self-esteem

Living with these symptoms can make the ins and outs of daily life grueling enough as is, but so many aspects of our hustle culture often exacerbate symptoms. The pressure of the grind causes a lot of our clients with ADHD to feel like it’s impossible to “keep up” with their peers. And the hellscape of the 24/7 news cycle mixed with the expectation to always be plugged in can create a lot of distractions for the ADHD brain.

We remain in the age of dis-information when it comes to ADHD since the condition continues to be somewhat stigmatized and misunderstood. Despite being high-functioning in many cases, individuals with ADHD are often written off as “lazy” or “disorganized” and misdiagnosed as struggling with other issues. The lack of support and understanding is reinforced by the fact that schools and workplaces are not built for neurodivergent brains, instead perpetuating a “Try Harder” mentality.

A Therapist Can Affirm Your Experience Of ADHD And Support You In Harnessing Your Strengths

ADHD is treatable with therapy. As you learn how to break free of unrealistic expectations and tell that shame spiral to pipe down, you can develop strategies that actually work with your brain. No longer do you have to feel like a round peg trying to fit desperately in a square hole—Therapie welcomes your unique strengths and perspectives in the process of finally creating a life that takes your shape.

Our Practice Specializes In ADHD Treatment For High-Functioning Adults

The foundation of Therapie’s approach to ADHD treatment centers around these questions: What is happening and why?, Where do you want to go?, and How do we get there? Instead of pathologizing or trying to “fix” your symptoms, we want to help you nurture self-compassion in the process of unlearning harmful narratives about what you can and can’t accomplish.

Throughout counseling, we will explore how ADHD is impacting your productivity, relationships, and wellbeing. By identifying the patterns keeping you stuck, we will begin shifting your mindset from a place of self-blame to a place of self-understanding.

Actionable Skills That Will Last You For Life

We want you to leave therapy with individualized, practical tools for managing ADHD in a way that works for your unique brain. As big neuroscience nerds, we use research-based modalities that are proven to foster skills for:

  • Time management and productivity
  • Executive functioning
  • Emotional regulation
  • Reducing overwhelm and decision fatigue
  • Impulse control and self-monitoring
  • Personalized accountability systems

You’ve been spending years getting gold in mental gymnastics and putting out fires with a low-pressure hose; it’s no wonder your tank is running low. Whether you’re navigating the busy streets near The Parthenon or rushing to a meeting downtown near the Tennessee State Capitol, ADHD does not have to control your life. With the right tools and support, our therapists can support you in learning how to work with your brain—not against it.

Still Unsure If ADHD Therapy Is Right For You?

Is ADHD real or am I just making excuses?

Many of the high-functioning professionals we work with in counseling have internalized the belief that they should simply “Try Harder” or be more disciplined, despite struggling with ADHD symptoms. ADHD is a real neurological condition that affects focus, executive functioning, and emotional regulation; it is not a weakness or an excuse.

As of 2022, approximately 1 in 9 U.S. children (11.4%) have ever received an ADHD diagnosis, and many carry these challenges into adulthood.

Do I have to have an ADHD diagnosis in order to benefit from therapy?

Not at all. We at Therapie know that a diagnosis can be a double-edged sword; labels sometimes feel limiting, but having an answer to the root cause of your symptoms can also be helpful. Our therapists like to focus more on each client’s individual experience rather than a list of criteria for diagnosis.

Whether you’ve been diagnosed with ADHD since childhood, are newly navigating a diagnosis as an adult, or are curious about if your symptoms align with a diagnosis, therapy can help make your life feel more manageable.

I’ve tried ADHD treatment before and it didn’t work—what if therapy just isn’t for me?

A lot of our clients have tried productivity hacks, self-help tips, and even therapy in the past, only to fall back in old patterns. But managing ADHD isn’t about willpower; it’s about understanding how your brain works and learning the workable tools that actually align with it.

This is a personalized process focused on your particular goals, values, and habits so that you can make meaningful, lasting progress. And we are confident our approach can help.

Will I have to change who I am to succeed?

It’s a common fear that if you have ADHD, you will have to hyper-focus and become hyper-organized in order to fit into a “typical” mold. However, our therapists do not believe in an approach to ADHD treatment that forces you into some rigid structure. Instead, we want to collaborate with you to harness your creativity and strengths that fit your natural working and relational style.

There are no doubt many strengths that are enhanced by your ADHD—let’s tap into those so you can live as authentically and functionally as possible. From the creative energy of the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum to the historic performances at Ryman Auditorium, Nashville celebrates unique talents and perspectives—just like we celebrate yours.
