Discernment Counseling in Nashville

Let's cut right to the chase: the prospect of separation or divorce sucks

You and your partner are stuck and struggling, unable to agree on anything these days—including if it’s time to throw in the towel.

Maybe the two of you have tried couples therapy already. Maybe you’ve had serious conversations about lawyers, custody, and the dreaded D-word. Or maybe one of you is hopeful that things will get resolved while the other seems to have a foot out the door.

This is a painful place to be in a marriage: unsure what the future holds for your relationship, or if there is even a future at all. But our therapists are here to offer valuable support and insight during this process, paving the way toward clarity.

At Therapie, located on 25th Avenue North near Centennial Park in Nashville, our therapists make effective, evidence-based discernment counseling available to couples who are seriously considering separation or divorce. If at least one of you feels ready to leave the marriage or relationship, therapy can help you make a clear, informed decision about where to go next and how to get there in a healthy, mutually respectful way.

The Discernment Process Is About Clarity, Not Problem-Solving

Discernment counseling is not couples therapy. Couples therapy is for partners who are both fully committed to staying in the relationship, while discernment counseling is designed for couples where at least one partner is “checked out” or seriously considering a separation. Studies show that a lack of commitment is one of the most commonly cited reasons for separation among married couples, accounting for about 75% of divorce proceedings.

While both couples therapy and discernment counseling are available through our practice, we generally recommend discernment sessions for couples who:

  • Feel intensely emotionally disconnected and/or unable to resolve chronic conflict
  • Tried couples therapy in the past, but didn’t experience positive outcomes
  • Have actively taken steps toward divorce, even if one partner may still be committed to preserving or rebuilding the relationship
  • Have children and want to be thoughtful about the future, whether that means pursuing reconciliation or preparing for a successful co-parenting relationship

Unlike other therapy approaches that seem too quick to fix or too neutral to offer lasting support, this process walks the line between thoughtfulness and urgency, taking both partners’ goals and feelings into consideration. In fact, research shows that 47% of couples who complete discernment counseling choose to pursue reconciliation through intensive couples therapy.

Discernment Counseling Is Available Through Our Practice

At Therapie, our discernment counseling services in Nashville aim to provide you with more than just clarity—you can finish the process with concrete insight and a sense of groundedness at a time when you’re feeling lost, reactive, overwhelmed, and all-around sh*tty about the way things are going in your relationship.

We’re not here to push you to problem-solve prematurely, but to help you figure out if staying in the relationship is even the right thing in the first place. Whether you’re coming from Green Hills, East Nashville, or anywhere in Davidson County, we’re here to help you navigate this difficult decision.

Our Approach

No matter what brings our clients into therapy, our process is guided by the foundational questions of What is happening and why? and Where do you want to go and how do we get there? In discernment counseling, we focus less on the specific challenges in your relationship and more on arriving at a consensus about whether you want to pursue a divorce or address ongoing issues through focused, intentional couples therapy.

Sessions are typically 80 minutes long, with couples often needing 1 to 5 sessions to determine next steps. Part of the session will be spent together, while part of the session will be spent in one-on-one conversations with your therapist.

The therapist will act as a guide about what the future might look like, whether that future involves you staying together or separating. Then, together, you can decide on which of the three paths to pursue: staying the course, separating/divorcing, or committing to intensive couples therapy to try to find solutions.

Through this process, you can gain self-understanding, clarity about next steps, a framework for decision-making, improved communication, and motivation for growth. Whether you decide you’re ready to embark on transformative couples work or embark on your paths separately, you can gain the clarity you’re looking for. With discernment counseling, you can feel confident that you’ve exhausted every avenue in the process of considering a separation or divorce.

Even if it feels like your relationship is grasping for straws, we promise you are not out of options. At our Midtown Nashville office, we’ll get real with you in this process, recognizing that you need to make a decision now—without pushing you to do something you aren’t ready for. If you’re unsure whether you want to keep trying or call it quits, Therapie offers you a place where you can meaningfully slow down and get clear. That clarity, in and of itself, can be a powerful kind of hope.

Common Questions About Discernment Counseling…

We’ve already tried couples therapy and it didn’t help—how will discernment sessions be any different?

We work with a lot of couples who've tried counseling, which only works if both partners are invested in the process. If one person isn’t invested, couples are more likely to make the jump from ineffective therapy to divorce.

For some couples, the discernment process is actually a better place to start. Discernment counseling is different from couples therapy in that it's entirely designed to help you make a decision about whether staying in the relationship at all is the right choice. Typically, couples are in discernment counseling for only 1 to 5 sessions before they come to a mutual agreement about whether they want to stay the course, pursue a separation/divorce, or commit to intensive couples therapy to focus on problem-solving in their relationship.

Won’t a discernment counselor just tell us to get a divorce?

No—it is not a discernment counselor's job to push you either way on your decision. Rather, the discernment counseling process is all about couples reaching consensus on what makes the most sense for their marriage or relationship.

At Therapie, we don't have an agenda for how couples decide to move forward; we just want to help you get to a place where both of you feel like you can make a sustainable, informed decision about what's next.

What if my partner won’t agree to counseling?

Relationship struggles are difficult enough as is, but it probably feeds fuel to the fire when you experience the added isolation that comes with feeling like you're on a completely different page than your partner. This is a painful place to be, and our therapists empathize with the feelings of stress, frustration, and overwhelm that have likely bubbled to the surface.

It may help to determine where your partner is in the process—if they're committed to staying together or considering separation or divorce—so that we can get a better idea of what's holding them back from meeting with a discernment counselor. We can always offer a free consultation to them to address any concerns they have about the process. And if they're still hesitant about committing to counseling, keep in mind that individual therapy may be a good way to help you decide how you want to move forward on your own terms.
