How to Respond to Family Rejection as an LGBTQ+ Person

Family rejection can be a deeply painful experience for LGBTQ+ individuals. The people we often expect to be our strongest allies and sources of unconditional love can sometimes become the very ones who cause profound hurt through their disapproval or outright rejection.

Navigating these complex emotions and finding healthy ways to respond is an essential part of looking after your well-being. You can’t change who you are, and you shouldn’t feel like you have to. We’ll look at healthy ways to respond to family rejection as an LGBTQ+ person, focusing on building resilience and a fulfilling life.

Recognize What Is Out of Your Control

We can’t control the thoughts and opinions of others, no matter how much we would like to. It can be especially hurtful when family members don’t offer acceptance, but it is ultimately their choice.

What you do have control over are your actions toward others and your own thoughts about yourself. These are what matter most. Instead of focusing your energy on changing the feelings of others, make an effort to focus on the things that make you beautiful. It might just take time for your family to come around, and they will hopefully realize that they’re missing out by rejecting you.

Take Care of Yourself

Dealing with a difficult family dynamic can be draining. This makes it especially important to take care of yourself during this time. Making an effort to meet your basic needs is a good place to start. Fuel your body with healthy meals, aim for at least seven hours of sleep each night, drink enough water, and find ways to move your body.

You can take care of yourself a step further by practicing self-care. Make time in your day to do the things you love. This could mean watching a favorite TV show, reading a book, or listening to music. You can also implement healthy coping mechanisms like deep breathing, writing in a journal, or meditating. Find what works best for you and try to carve out some self-care time every day.

Set Boundaries

You may not be able to control how your family feels about you and who you are, but you can have some control over how they interact with you. Boundaries can seem harsh at first, especially for family, but they can help to protect your overall mental health and wellness.

Some boundaries to consider are those that protect your time, emotions, and physical space. Be clear when establishing boundaries, and follow through with them. It’s natural for new boundaries to take some time to become normal for everyone involved.

Identify Your Allies

You weren’t able to pick your family, but you might have people in your life that you consider your chosen family. These are the people who are there for you, love you, and will support you through the good times and the challenging times.

Close friends can help to provide a greater sense of safety, security, and stability that your own related family members aren’t willing to give to you. Lean on these close friends when your family isn’t there for you.

You Don’t Have to Go It Alone

Being rejected by your own family can be extremely isolating and painful. Even though you may feel alone, it’s important to remember that you aren’t. You may have relatives, friends, or peers who support you for who you truly are, and that’s all that matters.

If you notice that your mental health is declining, consider reaching out to a LGBTQ+ therapist for additional support. We’ll be able to work with you to navigate your family dynamic and build your sense of self-worth. We’re here for you when you’re ready. Reach out today to get started.
