What Is Situational Depression vs. Clinical Depression?

a depressed man

Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions, and it can look very different for different people. There isn’t a one-size-fits-all type of depression, but we can identify several categories that the condition fits into. Two of the most common are situational depression and clinical depression.

These two types of depression share some similarities, but they have their differences. Read on to learn more about what makes them unique and which treatments are available for each.

What Is Situational Depression?

Situational depression is a temporary type of depression that is triggered by a traumatic or stressful life event. These events can be difficult to process or accept, which can cause a person to feel like they’re unable to move forward in life. Below are some of the most common triggers of situational depression:

  • Death of a loved one
  • Divorce
  • Financial problems
  • Health concerns
  • Job loss
  • Retirement

What Is Clinical Depression?

Clinical depression is a more chronic and severe type of depression. This is also known as major depression or major depressive disorder. Clinical depression interferes with someone’s daily life and routine as well as the normal functions of their body and brain.

Unlike situational depression, the exact cause of clinical depression is unknown. These are believed to be some of the most common risk factors of clinical depression:

  • Brain chemistry
  • Genetics
  • Major life events
  • Substance use and abuse

The Differences

It’s important to know the differences between clinical and situational depression to determine the best course of treatment. In this section, we’ll compare the signs and symptoms of these two types of depression. Then, we’ll look at some effective treatment options for each.

Signs and Symptoms

Situational and clinical depression can share a lot of the same signs and symptoms, but they also have their differences. Below are some of the most common signs and symptoms of situational depression:

  • Anxiety
  • Crying episodes
  • Hopelessness
  • Isolation
  • Lack of concentration
  • Listlessness
  • Sadness
  • Sleeping problems
  • Suicidal ideation
  • Withdrawal
  • Worry

It’s important to know that the above symptoms can also be present in those suffering from clinical depression. The signs and symptoms listed below are some of the most common for clinical depression, but they can also appear as a result of situational depression.

  • Aches and pains
  • Depressed overall mood
  • Difficulty concentrating
  • Digestive issues
  • Loss of interest in activities previously enjoyed
  • Changes in eating habits
  • Changes in sleeping habits
  • Feelings of guilt or worthlessness
  • Restlessness
  • Slow movements
  • Suicide attempts
  • Trouble making decisions
  • Weight fluctuations

Treatment

Situational depression is short-term, especially when compared to clinical depression. Most cases of situational depression can be resolved on their own or by implementing lifestyle changes without seeking additional support or treatment.

Situational Depression

Lifestyle changes can play an important role in helping people deal with situational depression. Implementing the changes listed below can sometimes dramatically ease the difficulties associated with this type of depression:

  • Eating a well-balanced diet
  • Exercising
  • Joining a support group
  • Leaning on loved ones for support
  • Participating in an activity or hobby
  • Sticking to a sleep schedule and routine

Clinical Depression

Clinical depression typically requires additional support, and sometimes medication, for lasting relief. Working with a licensed and trained mental health professional is a powerful way to get to the root cause of negative thoughts and feelings as well as learn tools to improve quality of life. Medication may be prescribed along with therapy sessions on a case-by-case basis.

Finding Support

Life is filled with ups and downs. Even if you’re typically a happy-go-lucky type of person, you can’t choose whether you’ll end up with depression or not. No matter what condition or situation you’re dealing with, it’s important to know that support is available. One of the best things you can do for yourself is to reach out for help. Get started today by setting up an initial consultation for depression counseling.
