What Is the Goal of Emotionally Focused Therapy?

There’s no such thing as a one-size-fits-all approach when it comes to therapy. There are just too many different types of mental health challenges, and many require their own treatment plan.

The fact that each person is unique makes it even clearer that no single therapy method is right in all situations. Everyone has their own history, wants, needs, values, and goals, and these should be taken into consideration when deciding on therapy.

Most types of therapy have the same overarching goals: reduce the signs and symptoms of a condition, improve mental health, and restore quality of life. However, there are more specific goals and methods associated with therapy that make certain approaches better than others.

One of these types of therapy is emotionally focused therapy, often referred to as EFT. This treatment method is focused on helping individuals, partners, or families resolve emotional issues by helping people connect with themselves and others.

Build Emotional Awareness

One of the main goals of EFT is to help individuals become more aware of their emotions. This type of therapy works to help individuals identify and express their core emotions, which are often hidden. The technique can uncover underlying fear, shame, or sadness.

Bringing attention to these emotions helps individuals avoid masking these feelings through other emotions like anger or self-criticism. EFT also teaches individuals how to better manage and regulate these emotions in healthy ways. By doing so, individuals are better equipped to respond to future situations and events.

Improve Self-Awareness

When individuals have a better awareness and understanding of their own emotions, they can work to build a better sense of self and how their actions, behaviors, emotions, and thoughts align with their values and beliefs. Building a stronger sense of self-awareness can also build self-compassion and emotional intelligence. This can be a huge benefit for one’s relationship with themselves and others.

Address Attachment Style

A therapist may work with you to identify your attachment style. Your attachment style is formed with your primary caregiver when you’re a child. If your needs were met on a consistent and regular basis, you likely formed a secure attachment style. If your care was inconsistent or you had to fend for yourself, you may have an insecure attachment style.

While you didn’t have a say in the type of attachment style you formed in your formative years, you can work to form a more secure attachment style as an adult. EFT helps individuals and couples identify these styles to better understand and respond to one another’s wants and needs.

Change Unhealthy Patterns

Another main focus of EFT involves working to identify and change any unhealthy patterns. By working with a therapist, you’ll be able to gain a better understanding of any negative patterns in your life. You can then start the process of creating more positive interactions as you move forward.

This positive change can be beneficial for individuals, but it can also be very helpful for people in a relationship. By taking the time to challenge and change unhealthy patterns, individuals and partners will be able to show more empathy and support for themselves and others.

Is EFT Right for You?

If you’re looking to attend therapy for yourself, your relationship, or your family, emotionally focused therapy could be a great option. It’s especially effective for anyone interested in improving relationships or addressing attachment issues and emotional distress.

A better way to manage your own emotions, stronger internal and external bonds, and an improved understanding of yourself are just a few of the many different benefits of EFT. Reach out today to see how EFT can benefit you.
