Connections are essential for one’s overall mental health and wellness. It’s part of human survival and can be as important as other basic human needs like food, water, and shelter.
These connections help you feel supported and comforted. This can be especially true if you are part of the LGBTQ+ community.
The world has come a long way over the past ten years, but it still has a long way to go. Sometimes it feels like we take five steps forward and ten steps back.
You matter and belong. This is how to find a supportive LGBTQ+ Community.
Local Organizations
Local organizations can be a great way to connect with like-minded individuals. There may be clubs or centers in your area that offer meetups or get-togethers for members and allies of the LGBTQ+ community. These organizations often plan ways to socialize in a safe, secure, and welcoming spot through an event or activity. These local organizations can be a great way to connect with others and feel supported, especially if you’re not receiving it from your home life. Your LGBTQ+ community can become your chosen family.
Online
If you’ve researched your area and there aren’t that many support groups or if you don’t feel comfortable attending a local group, there are still ways that you can connect with others and find your community. The digital world has grown immensely. There are many different online communities that you can connect with at your fingertips. Use social media applications like Instagram, TikTok, or Reddit to connect with LGBTQ+ members. There are also specific websites and advocacy groups that you can find online.
The Arts
LGBTA+ members have grown significantly within the arts space. If you have an interest in creative expression, such as art or musical theater, there are many different communities, programs, and events that you could sign up for to join in on the fun and community dynamic. Books or podcasts are another great way to feel a sense of connection if you’re not quite ready to come out just yet.
Sports
Finding ways to move your body is beneficial for your physical health and can be a great way to improve your overall mental health and wellness. Exercise is proven to help reduce stress levels and improve overall mood. Finding an LGBTQ+-friendly sports league or facility can help you feel better overall and find the connections you want. The area where you live may already have an inclusive sports league for a variety of sports like volleyball, softball, kickball, rugby, etc. You can also check the websites and social media pages of local gyms in your area to see their stance on inclusivity.
Volunteering
Volunteering for a local charity in your community can be another great way for you to not only give back but to connect with others in your community and have a greater sense of belonging as well. Giving your energy and time to a group can not only help you internally, but you’ll also be surrounding yourself with other individuals who share the same interests and passions.
Next Steps
No matter if you’re from a large area that is welcoming and accepting of everyone or if you’re from a smaller town that isn’t as open to what they view as a different way of living, finding your people is possible. There are many different ways for you to find a community of people who are just like you and who support and want what’s best for you. Even if you’re not getting that sense of support from your immediate family, members of the LGBTQ+ can become your chosen family instead. If you’re struggling with your identity or finding support, consider reaching out to a mental health professional. LGBTQ+ therapy can help you work through those thoughts and feelings and assist in finding a support group for you as well.
