Juggling work, life, and stress does not have a finish line. It’s a never-ending process that must factor in changes in all facets of your life. In a new kind of world built on profits and device usage, it can be challenging to maintain such a balance. Even the term work-life balance puts “work” first. Therefore, a good place to start is to reframe that equation.
Caring for one’s life, needs, dreams, desires, and goals is a path toward good mental health, fulfillment, and enrichment. Of course, you have to pay bills but that doesn’t mean it’s all you think about. How do we make this happen?
We Contain Multitudes
At any given point, we are playing multiple roles. Parent, spouse, employee, and more — each identity requires us to accentuate different aspects of our personality. The key involves not losing touch with the deeper Self. We may act a little differently depending on the setting, but we can’t lose sight of who we are and what we need.
This isn’t meant to imply that anyone can live in a 24/7 state of balance. Your family, career, and community can each make major claims on your time. The idea is to remain aware of the need to keep your varied life roles in harmony with one another.
Finding Balance in Today’s World
Evaluate Your Tech Usage
Relatively speaking, digital life is a new development. It brings with it, of course, some perks. More often, it’s a time-eater and the source of unnecessary stress. As for juggling the varied demands of life and work, those devices can cause you to lose sight of where work ends and life begins. With that in mind:
- Set strict restrictions on how much time you dedicate to scrolling on screens. Replace these activities with choices that enhance your well-being (see below for more).
- Set and enforce boundaries with your employer. You should not be expected to answer emails once your shift has ended. Safeguard your personal time.
- Extend those boundaries to anyone who feels entitled to your time and energy. It’s not just your boss who infringes on your daily life. Assess the people in your circle and make some important decisions as to how you allocate your efforts.
- Hone your time management skills. At home or work, stress levels decrease when you set realistic goals, avoid procrastination, and prioritize chores and tasks. Get more comfortable with saying no.
Prioritize Self-Care
No one lives a stress-free life. That’s where self-care enters the picture. Protecting your mental and physical well-being serves as a bulwark against the detrimental impact of stress. It does not require elaborate measures. Rather, diligently stick to basics such as:
- Daily physical activity and exercise
- Regular sleep patterns
- Healthy eating and drinking choices
- Stress management and relaxation techniques
Another component of self-love is making your personal life a source of joy. Pursue your interests, hobbies, and dreams. Connect with loved ones in meaningful ways — never postponing positive experiences or taking them for granted. Take up new challenges and expose yourself to new ideas to keep your mind open and sharp.
Make all of the above a non-negotiable day-to-day priority. Without self-care, the life-work balance becomes a pipe dream.
