What Is Existential OCD?

OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) is characterized by distressing, recurring thoughts and the repetitive actions taken to alleviate them. The most common portrayals of OCD often highlight handwashing, meticulous checking, or rigid organization, but these are only some of the ways the disorder can present itself.

The reality is that OCD encompasses numerous subtypes, each with unique obsessions, compulsions, and symptomatic expressions. Existential OCD is one of these subtypes, and it comes with its own signs and symptoms. Read on to learn more about this particular form of OCD.

What Is Existential OCD?

Existential OCD is a subtype of OCD in which a person experiences unwanted and intrusive thoughts about existence, life, or reality. While it’s natural to wonder about certain things in life that are unexplainable, a person who has this form of OCD will experience anxiety or fear in response to uncertainty.

The Cause

Similar to other forms of OCD, existential OCD is believed to be caused by a combination of different factors. This could include a person’s brain chemistry, physical environment, psychological factors, or genetics.

There are many risk factors or life events that can trigger existential OCD. Significant life transitions and traumatic experiences are some of the top contributors. Below is a list of events that can contribute to the onset or worsening of existential OCD:

  • Abuse
  • Assault
  • Divorce
  • Family struggles
  • Giving birth
  • Illness
  • Loss of a job
  • Loss of a loved one
  • Loss of a pregnancy
  • Neglect
  • New job
  • Pregnancy
  • School stress
  • Starting a new relationship
  • Work stress

Treatment Options for Existential OCD

Now that we know a little bit more about what existential OCD is, let’s explore some treatment methods. Similar to other forms of OCD, existential OCD can be treated through a combination of different approaches.

Implement Self-Care

This step may seem simple, but it’s powerful. Maintaining a healthy and balanced lifestyle can help reduce some of the anxiety that comes with OCD. This means eating a healthy and well-balanced diet, getting enough sleep each night, and finding ways to reduce your stress levels during the day.

Join a Support Group

Dealing with something like OCD can feel incredibly lonely. Joining a support group can help. It’s a great way to meet people who have had similar experiences and will understand some of what you’ve been through. Offering support to others can also be empowering.

One of the best options for people struggling with existential or any other form of OCD is to reach out to a licensed and trained mental health professional.
